Forecast
It was a wild night in the mountains and as expected the resorts were hit by heavy rain. The Victorian resorts got off a bit lighter than NSW with around 30mm. Unfortunately NSW was smashed with Perisher recieving a whopping 86mm and Thredbo 55mm. This will have caused a lot of damage to the cover, especially down low where the runoff with see creeks full and pooling on the flatter areas. The good news is that what was lost should be replenished by the snow that is on the way. Today will see the showers and rain in the NSW resorts started to move away and the temps will drop below zero. Victorian resorts are already below zero this morning and have light snow falling/ Light snow will continue on and off throughout the day and start to lower overnight. Winds will be very strong nudging 100km/h about the peaks so it's likely we will see some lifts on hold (and this is likely over the next four days). Snowfalls will become heavier on Thursday with the snow level dropping to around 1100-1200m with winds once again around 100km/h about the peaks, which should affect some lifts. Friday is will be one to remember. There will see widespread heavy snowfalls with blizzard conditions (winds up around 120km/h about the peaks causing lift closures) and snowfalls possibly reaching as low as 700m. Most resorts will be looking to add around 30-50cm on this day alone (most will fall during the afternoon and night). Roads will be chaotic with heavy snow covering the low lying areas, so be prepared for slow trips in and out of resorts. Saturday will see only light snow showers above 1200m although the winds will still remain strong. Roads will be snow affected from the heavy snow that fell overnight so it may be difficult getting into the resorts. Sunday will see conditions ease and the wind start to die down. Most of next week looks a lot tamer with light winds and some sunny breaks. Anyone heading out into the backcountry take care as there could be some slippage due to the heavy pre-frontal rain we saw before the heavy snow. This dump should give us enough snow to see out the season and it's likely resorts will ease up on any snowmaking from here on in.
