Short Term Outlook
It was a wild, wet and windy night across the resorts, with yesterday’s rain unfortunately continuing well into the evening. Wind gusts reached 130km/h at the top of Thredbo, 120km/h at Hotham and 106km/h at Mt Buller. The rain has damaged the snow cover, with some significant rainfall totals recorded: 83mm at Thredbo, 62mm at Hotham and Falls Creek, 54mm at Perisher and 45mm at Mt Buller. The good news is that temperatures have finally dropped below zero early this morning, albeit a couple of hours later than hoped. All resorts are now seeing snowfalls, with heavy snow and blizzard conditions rapidly filling in the damage from the rain. Heavy snowfalls will continue today, with the snow level lowering to around 1200m, possibly a little lower. Blizzard conditions will ease overnight. Roads will be snow affected this morning, and as the snow level drops, chains will be required. Allow extra time for travel if heading up or down the mountains today. Looking ahead, light snow flurries are expected Tuesday, with snow showers developing again on Wednesday. Thursday will be mostly cloudy with gusty winds.
