Reclaim Kosci

The amazing colours of Kosciuszko National Park include the elegant stripes of this Lace Monitor (Varanus varius). This one is quite a special lizard. It has the 'Bells Phase' colour form, which means it has alternating dark and light bands along its entire length. Such banding is restricted to the end half of the tail in the common colour form. And its pale bands are yellow, which is less common than white. And Bells Phase Lace monitors are not common in Kosciuszko NP. So, a lucky shot by photographer Ian Pulsford, near Gang Gang Creek in northern KNP. With thanks to Don Fletcher for the tech info.
